Quality of life parameters, pain and fatigue in lymphoma patients: relationship with International Prognostic Index (IPI)

The purpose of this study was to examine quality of life, pain and fatigue in lymphomas patients and its prognostic value. 119 non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NL) patients completed Brief Pain Inventory, Brief Fatigue Inventory and SF-36.
Patients were stratified by International Prognostic Index (IPI) and Integral Quality of Life Index (IQLI). The results have shown that patients with aggressive lymphomas have significantly lower quality of life than those with indolent lymphomas.
There was found strong association between quality of life level and IPI risk group both in aggressive and indolent lymphomas patients groups. 48.7% of NL patients exhibited pain with higher percent in aggressive lymphomas patients (64.9%). Fatigue was reported by 77.3% NL patients with prevalence in aggressive lymphomas patients (93%).
Comparison patients across stratified groups yielded significant association: the lower IQLI the high risk of early progression of the disease; the higher IQLI the lower risk of early progression of the disease.
The findings are true for the aggressive lymphomas as well for the indolent ones. Fatigue severity and IQLI might be included as important additional criteria into the new prognostic models of NL.
